Frequently asked questions - before acquiring a plot
Q How long is the waiting list?
A For most sites it's around 2 years although this can vary depending on the time of year and the site you have applied for.
Q I've been told there are abandoned plots on a site. Can I have it?
A No. Plots are given in strict waiting list order. A plot may appear to be abandoned but sometimes there is a reason for this which tenants may not be aware of.
Q Can I apply for more than one site?
A Yes. You can tick as many as you like on your application form but you will only be given one. plot.
Q I have been evicted from a plot by EAGS in the past. Can I apply for another plot?
A No. Once you have been evicted from one of our plots you can't re-apply.
Q Can I apply for a plot for someone else?
A No. The person applying for the plot is expected to be the main tenant.
Q If I refuse a plot when offered, will I loose my place on the waiting list?
A Don't worry if you don't like the plot you are offered you will be held at the top of the list until something more suitable comes up. However, if you are hoping for a pristine plot you will have a very long wait!
Frequently asked questions - existing tenants
Q Will the allotment society supply a skip for me or the site?
A No, EAGS does not have the funds to pay for a skip. You are welcome to arrange a skip for yourself, but do let the office know beforehand.
Q Can I leave areas that I am not using covered with carpet to suppress the weeds?
A No. Carpet can leach toxic chemicals into the soil over time. You can use cardboard, mulch or weed suppressant fabric but this must only be temporary. You are expected to cultivate the entirety of your plot.
Q Can I pass my plot on to someone else when I'm done?
A No. Plots are given in strict waiting list order. However, a plot may be passed to a close family member or the co-worker, providing they have been a co-worker for at least 3 years, at the discretion of EAGS.
Q Can I hold a party on my plot?
A No. Allotments are for growing food produce and are not area for parties and gatherings.
Q I'm finding it difficult to manage my plot but don't want to give up. Can I reduce the size?
A Yes, although for some plots this might not be possible. Contact the office to discuss your requirements. There may be a more suitable plot elsewhere or even a raised bed.
Q I want to give up my plot. What do I do?
A Contact the office. Plots can be given up at any time throughout the year. You are expected to leave your plot in a clean and tidy condition, removing any personal belongings. Once you have returned your key the office staff will process any refunds due to you after the end of that month. There are no rent refunds.
