Summer PlotFest 2025

MUSIC AND FOOD BRING COMMUNITY TOGETHER

The annual Summerfest at Gorringe Road Allotments (Sunday, July 27) was a relaxed celebration of growers with a passion for grow-your-own and the community.

Visitors enjoyed music, a barbecue, a sale of honey, and a competition of stunning allotment-grown produce, delicious home-made cakes and jams, and fresh-cut flowers.

Other stallholders included Cats Protection (www.cats.org.uk), Breathe Easy Foundation (www.breatheeasyfoundation.co.uk) and Environment First from Eastbourne Borough Council, who provided information about recycling.

Waterweek (https://waterweekeastsussex.wordpress.com/) were there with activities and a performance to engage people about issues facing water.

And Rooted Community Food (www.rooted.food) involved visitors in an art installation, creating decorative bindings around seedhead stems, which is now installed on the allotment.

There was more entertainment with a skittle alley by the Eastbourne Rotary Club (www.rotary.ribi.org) and a fun welly-throwing competition.

It was a joyful event where a large community of allotment growers could get together and share their passion with the community.

This love of all things growing has been depicted in a beautiful mural on the wall of the allotment shop by artist Tanya-Lisa Jewl Parsnips. It is dedicated by Sussex allotment pioneer Mary Ann Gilbert (1776-1845).

Eastbourne Liberal Democrat MP Josh Babarinde presented awards to the winners of the produce, baking and cut-flower competition.
